Investigation underway following fatal A50 collision in Stoke

We are investigating a police pursuit prior to a fatal collision on the A50 in Stoke in which one man died and a woman was seriously injured.

The man who died has been named as Joshua Sanna, aged 19, from London. He was driving a Toyota Aygo and his passenger, an 18-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. She remains there in a critical condition.

Staffordshire Police referred the incident to us as the car they were travelling in had been pursued shortly before the collision, after it failed to stop for officers in the Etruria area just before 6am on Sunday (15 April). The Aygo was then in collision with two other vehicles near the Longton interchange after turning on to the A50.

After being notified by the force we sent investigators to the scene and the post incident procedure at Staffordshire Police Headquarters to begin gathering information and review CCTV footage from police vehicles involved.Following an assessment we declared an independent investigation.

IOPC Regional Director Derrick Campbell said: “Our sympathies are with Mr Sanna’s family, the family of the woman who was seriously injured and everyone else affected by this tragic incident. We have a duty to independently investigate this matter and we will be examining the events prior to the collision to determine if appropriate policies and procedures were followed.

“We have contacted the families of Mr Sanna and the woman involved to more fully explain our role and will keep them and the force regularly updated on our investigation.”
