Responding to a campaign by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health to highlight the importance of environmental health, Cllr Simon Blackburn, Chair of the Local Government Association’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, said:

“Environmental health is a vital part of councils’ public health role and provides robust protection to the public from risks to human health in areas such as food safety, housing and air pollution.

“Environmental Health Practitioners are leading efforts in communities to provide this reassuring safeguarding role. However, given the impact of funding pressures on vital local regulatory services over the past decade, councils need to be given the right funding and powers so they can continue to protect the public, reduce demand for services and save money for the taxpayer.”
