LGA responds to Chief Medical Officer's report on childhood obesity

Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, Cllr Ian Hudspeth, responds to the Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies’ report on childhood obesity.

“Childhood obesity is one of the biggest public health challenges we face and this report is another reminder of the urgent need for radical action to combat this epidemic.

“We strongly support the report’s call for stronger planning powers to help deal with some of the underlying causes of obesity, such as tackling the clustering of takeaways and restricting junk food advertising.

“Children have a right to grow up in a healthy environment, but bold and brave decisions need to be taken to help create this and meet the target of halving childhood obesity by 2030.

“The Government should use the Queen’s Speech to give councils greater powers and funding to make their places healthier, safer and easier for our children to get active.

“Unless we solve this crisis, today’s obese children will become tomorrow’s obese adults whose years of healthy life will be shortened by a whole host of health problems including diabetes, cancer and heart disease.”

Notes to editors

  • As part of its #CouncilsCan campaign, the LGA has set out radical plans for how the Queen’s Speech on October 14 can be used by the Prime Minister to reignite the devolution process to ensure all parts of England reap the benefits of having greater powers and funding to improve services such as housing, transport, and health and social care.
