LGA responds to Coram Family and childcare survey

Chair of the Local Government Association’s Children and Young People Board, Cllr Anntoinette Bramble, responded to Childcare Survey 2019 by Coram Family and Childcare

“Good quality early years education is vital in helping children get the best start in life. The intention behind the 30 hours free childcare scheme is good, but the funding provided by government does not cover the costs for providers in many cases. We are also concerned that the quality of provision and support for children with special needs will fall as providers cut additional support to make ends meet.

“The range of childcare schemes available is also complex and difficult for parents and carers to understand. This needs to be made clearer to make sure that families are getting what they’re entitled to and that the right provision is being developed in the right areas.

“In this year’s Spending Review, the Government must make sure that councils have enough funding to make sure that all families can access the high quality early education that meets their needs.”

Notes to editors

The LGA’s #CouncilsCan campaign aims to influence the forthcoming Spending Review and highlight the growing risk to vital local services if the Government does not take action to secure the financial sustainability of councils. Visit our campaign page for more information.
