LGA responds to FSB potholes analysis

The Local Government Association’s Transport spokesperson, Cllr Judith Blake, responded to analysis by the Federation of Small Businesses showing that local authorities receive a pothole complaint every 46 seconds

“Potholes can be the bane of the motorist’s life. They can damage vehicles and cause accidents.

“Councils are on the side of the motorist, and are doing all they can to keep our roads safe and resilient, fixing a pothole every 17 seconds. However, councils could do so much more if they are able to invest in looking after our country’s roads.

“Currently, 43 times more per mile is spent on maintaining our national roads – which make up just 3 per cent of all roads – than on local roads, which are controlled by councils and make up 97 per cent of England’s road network.

“While the extra one-off funding announced in recent years has helped, the upcoming Spending Round is an opportunity to provide councils with the funding they need to invest in our local roads.”
