LGA responds to Migration Advisory Committee report on relaxing immigration rules for care workers
Cllr David Fothergill, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, responded to the Migration Advisory Committee’s annual report, which includes a call for government to immediately relax immigration rules for care workers to help with recruitment and retention
“Given the spread of Omicron and increasing winter pressures, this report’s recommendation could help tackle some of the immediate challenges facing the care workforce, particularly in encouraging people to join and continue working in care, but would only be another short-term fix.
“The recent adult social care white paper contains some potentially strong measures on care worker recruitment and retention, but by the Government’s own admission this is a long-term plan, when action is needed right now.
“Care workers should be on the shortage occupation list to help recognise and fill these essential roles, as this report recommends, but we also need a lasting, long-term solution for the social care workforce which crucially addresses the issue of pay.”
