LGA responds to PAC report into regulatory and product safety system

Cllr Nesil Caliskan, Chair of the LGA’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, responded to the Public Accounts Committee report into the UK’s regulatory and product safety system

“Faulty products can cause life threatening injuries and even death, and the growth in popularity of online shopping which has been fuelled by the COVID-19 pandemic has made it more difficult for council teams to enforce legislation.

“It is crucial that government updates the existing regulatory framework for product safety to ensure that local authorities have the tools they need to protect consumers from unsafe products and have the flexibility to continue to adapt in the future.

“Alongside the right tools, councils need enough capacity within trading standards services to use them. It is vital that the Spending Review takes measures to increase resources for local regulatory services.

“We would also like to see funding for a programme of regulatory apprenticeships, and steps taken to enable councils to recover a greater proportion of the costs of running regulatory services from the businesses that benefit from them.”
