LGA responds to new FGM figures

LGA response to new quarterly statistics released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) about the number of identified cases of FGM in England.

"While these figures show new cases of FGM recorded, the FGM Centre's pioneering pilot project is also providing a more detailed picture of how many women and girls are at risk, adding to the information on total numbers available from the NHS, so support can be better targeted going forward.

"The report states there were seven cases where FGM was undertaken in the UK. While front line social workers in councils across the country are increasingly aware of the criminal practice of FGM, it will only be stopped permanently if all agencies, including GP practices, and communities work together to keep women and girls safe."

Notes

  1. HSCIC quarterly figures from January to March 2016 show that there were 1,242 newly recorded cases of FGM reported (compared with 1,316 in the previous quarter, October to December 2015), with 2,223 total attendances where FGM was identified or a procedure for FGM was undertaken (compared with 2,238 in the previous quarter) - www.hscic.gov.uk/catalogue/PUB20852
  2. 81 NHS trusts and 12 GP practices submitted one or more FGM attendance record. Submission is mandatory for NHS acute and mental health trusts and GP practices.
  3. The National FGM Centre is a partnership programme run by Barnardo's and the Local Government Association (LGA), funded by the Department for Education's Innovation Fund. It brings together experts to share their knowledge and skills to support and protect women and girls who are affected by FGM
