LGA responds to official figures showing increase in crack cocaine use

Cllr Ian Hudpseth, Chairman of the LGA’s Community Wellbeing Board, responds to the latest official statistics showing an increase in crack cocaine use in England.

“Councils want to continue to play their part in working with national government to deliver on our shared ambition to support those people and their families devastated by the harm caused by drug misuse.

"We have long argued that reductions to councils’ public health grant which is used to fund drug and alcohol prevention and treatment services is a false economy, which will only compound acute pressures for criminal justice and NHS services further down the line.

“Leaving councils to pick up the bill for treating new and increasing numbers of users while having fewer resources cannot be an option. It is vital that the Government uses the upcoming Spending Review to reverse the £700 million of real terms reductions to councils’ public health grants between 2015/16 and 2019/20 and secure sustainable long-term funding for public health in local government.”

With the right funding and powers, councils can continue to lead local areas, improve residents’ lives, reduce demand for public services and save money for the taxpayer. Securing the financial sustainability of local services must be the top priority for the Spending Review.
