Latest figures published on prescribing for diabetes

NHS Digital yesterday published its latest annual Prescribing for Diabetes: England 2007/08 to 2017/18 report.

Prescribing for Diabetes reports on and examines prescribing trends on medicines prescribed in primary care in England for the treatment and monitoring of diabetes during the period April 2007 to March 2018.

The report shows the number of items2 prescribed for diabetes as well as the total net ingredient cost3.   

It also includes information on the percentage of total primary care costs4 that relate to drugs used in diabetes5.

  1.   2. Prescription item: Prescribers in the community write prescriptions on a prescription form, known as a FP10. Each single item written on the form is, in this report, counted and considered as a prescription item.
  3. Net Ingredient Cost (NIC) is the basic cost of a drug as used in primary care. This is the cost at list price excluding VAT and is not necessarily the price the NHS paid. It does not take into account any contract prices or discounts, dispensing costs, fees or prescription charges income, so the amount the NHS paid will be different.
  4. This is the total primary Net Ingredient Cost.
