Literacy, coding and soft play: opportunities for everyone in our life-changing libraries

We’ve announced funding for 30 innovative projects to help tackle disadvantage in libraries across England.

A total of £3.9 million will be awarded to 30 local authorities’ libraries services and their partners from the Libraries Opportunities for Everyone Innovation Fund.

A literature-themed soft play area to help children to read and learn, a ‘human library’ where people can gift their talents to someone in need, and activities to reduce social isolation and digital exclusion are among the projects being funded.

From coding clubs to reading schemes, the projects will help public libraries to continue their life-changing work. Our Director of Libraries, Brian Ashley, blogged about this last year.

Successful projects include:

Greenwich Leisure and Royal Borough of Greenwich will receive £125,121 to create Story Book Play: an indoor soft play facility built around the theme of children’s literature.

Hull Culture and Leisure will receive £243,783 to create a space within the Central Library where anyone can explore their creativity in the arts, science and technology.

Norfolk County Council will receive £98,020 to work with volunteers to support emergent readers aged 8+ to develop their skills.

Telford and Wrekin Council will receive £50,000 to test a learning club for the whole family across libraries and venues in the borough.

Bournemouth Library Service, in partnership with five local authorities, will receive £136,846 to run shared reading activities, a programme of cultural and creative events, a digital app and online resources to address disadvantage in literacy and digital skills.
