London Open for Smart City Investment

New clean-tech centres launched to drive smart mobility and sustainability in the city.

Sadiq Khan, The Mayor of London, outlines his vision for London to become the world’s leading ‘Smart City’ – with digital technology and data at the heart of making the capital an even better place to live, work and invest.

London is already Europe’s leading tech hub, attracting talent, innovation and investment from around the world. However, the Mayor wants to see the capital become the leading global city in the use of smart technologies and data to improve public services and city life. According to a recent report by IESE Centre for Globalisation and Strategy, London is already Europe’s leading smart city, and is second only to New York in the global rankings.

To coincide with the launch of London Tech Week, the Mayor has officially opened Plexal, a new innovation centre at Here East that will support 800 technology start-ups & global corporations from across the world to meet the challenges of urban innovation.

Ford Motors have already opened a dedicated Smart Mobility Innovation Office at the centre; and University College London have launched a Global Disability Innovation Programme, a new accelerator focused on technology used to improve the lives of people living with disabilities.

The GLA has also launched a new £1.6m clean tech incubator, Better Futures, supporting London-based SMEs in tackling the effects of climate change nad kickstarting the development of a clean-tech cluster for London.

techUK welcomes these annoucements and will continue to work with members and the GLA to realise London's 'smart' ambitions accross energy, transport and urban services.
