Merseyside Police officer due in court

A Merseyside Police officer has been charged with theft, forgery and misconduct in public office.

Sergeant Colin Hughes, 34, is charged in relation to allegations that he forged a police document, made false statements and stole a machete previously seized by Merseyside Police.

The officer, who is currently suspended, is alleged to have carried out the offences as a temporary inspector with the force between July 2014 and December 2015.

The allegations have been the subject of an investigation carried out by Merseyside Police and managed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The decision to charge was authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service. Sergeant Hughes will appear before Liverpool Magistrates on 9 May 2017.
