MAC call for evidence review on whether teachers should be retained on the UK shortage occupation list.

On 26 May 2016, the Home Secretary wrote to the chair of the MAC and commissioned it to examine whether there is a shortage of teachers or teachers in specific subjects which it would be sensible to fill through non-European Economic Area (EEA) migration.

The government’s commission relates to all teaching professionals in primary and secondary education in both the state and private sectors. This means that it is limited to jobs that fall within the following Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes:

• SOC 2314 Secondary education teaching professionals
• SOC 2315 Primary and nursery education teaching professionals
• SOC 2316 Special needs education teaching professionals

The call for evidence document sets out the questions on which the MAC seeks views and evidence from partners, as well as how to respond.

The MAC is also keen to meet with partners to discuss the issues raised. There will be an initial partner event in 2 Marsham Street, London on 1 July 2016.

The closing date for responses to be received by the MAC is Friday 16 September 2016 and partners are strongly encouraged to submit their evidence before this date.
