MoU sets out shared commitment to arts and culture in Kent

Arts and culture in Kent received a boost this March when, on behalf of the Arts Council, Darren Henley signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University of Kent.

The agreement brings a renewed focus on the value that arts, culture and creativity bring to Kent and its communities; and the role that the Arts Council and University of Kent play in making that happen.

Whilst broad-ranging, the MoU outlines three important areas that the two organisations will actively work together to develop over the next three years:

Creative and cultural industries

The Arts Council and University of Kent will work together to support the growth of Medway and North Kent’s burgeoning creative cluster, particularly through ensuring creative talent has the opportunity to thrive.

Arts, Health and Well-being

Arts and culture can have a significant impact on all our health and wellbeing, but even more so for those who experience mental or physical health challenges. Through shared research, the Arts Council and University of Kent will explore the impact of creativity on health and wellbeing, particularly for children and young people.

Children and Young People

Both parties recognise that all children and young people should have the opportunity to access, participate in and programme great art and culture. The Arts Council and University of Kent will work together to capture evidence of impact and share it with policy makers.

Darren Henley, Chief Executive, Arts Council England, said: “Arts and culture can play a hugely important role in everyone’s lives – and it is wonderful to see this reflected in the ethos of organisations like University of Kent. Universities are in a powerful position to contribute to the local placemaking agenda, working with and supporting communities. Our new partnership with the University of Kent is a strong endorsement of the incredible impact that arts and culture can have.”
