NHS Confederation - Home-produced PPE will be a significant step towards a more secure supply

Niall Dickson, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, which represents organisations across the healthcare sector, responded to the news that two billion items of PPE have been sourced with domestic manufactures

"The fact that we will be producing significant home-produced PPE is a significant step towards a more secure supply. We have been too reliant on overseas imports and especially on the Chinese market. The move towards a more diverse supply chain and the creation of a domestic market is the obvious and correct strategy. Products made here will inevitably be more expensive, but we need that security for at least some of our supplies.

“The falling number of deaths and in particular the good news from Northern Ireland are important staging posts towards containing COVID-19. The message throughout the UK must be to follow the social distancing guidance and make sure we do not throw away the real progress we have made.  Moving out of lockdown was always going to be more challenging and less clear cut than imposing it in the first place- the next few weeks will be critical in seeing whether we can secure lasting gains. We should need no reminder of how disastrous another surge would be."
