NHS Confederation - Report highlighting the impact of Brexit on the social care workforce in Wales tells a familiar story

Nesta Lloyd-Jones, Interim Director of the Welsh NHS Confederation responded to the Welsh Government’s publication of the Implications of Brexit on the Social Care and Childcare Workforce in Wales

“We welcome this report which finds an important contribution is made by EU nationals working in social care. We’re presented with a familiar picture in the NHS with 3% of professionals working in the Welsh NHS identifying themselves as a EU National, whilst 7% of doctors and dentists working in Wales are EU Nationals.

“What we can’t asses at this stage is the impact Brexit might have on the number of EU Nationals coming to work in Wales in the long-term. We’re making some great strides in addressing workforce pressures, and we may find opportunities to train and employ more home-grown health and social care staff in the future, but this also takes time.

“We would encourage any EU national currently working in the NHS or social care in Wales to apply for the settled status scheme once it opens fully at the end of this month, but we also need a fair immigration system which encourages highly qualified and skilled professionals to work and live in Wales.”

“Both health and social care sectors are committed to working closely together. If we see an impact in one of those sectors, it may have an adverse effect on the other. We are clear we value the EU nationals who choose to work and live in Wales and the significant contribution they make to the health and care of our population and the communities they live in”.
