NHS Confederation - Significant challenges in out of hours GP services

Nesta Lloyd-Jones, Interim Director of the Welsh NHS Confederation responded to the Public Accounts Committee report into out of hour’s GP Services

“This report highlights some of the significant pressures GP out of hours services are experiencing in Wales.

“We are all too aware of recruitment and retention issues with professionals working within out-of-hours services. However, we are confident the joint workforce strategy being developed by Health Education and Improvement Wales and Social Care Wales will help create a sustainable workforce, not just in terms of the number of GPs, but right across the system.

“This report highlights some good practice and there are significant lessons to learn from initiatives which have worked, particularly those which utilise multi-disciplinary teams to provide a wider range of services and which lessen the load on GPs.

“And, despite these significant pressures, this years’ National Survey for Wales highlighted a 7 percentage point increase in satisfaction with GP services. This emphasises the strong commitment GPs in Wales have to making sure all patients receive high standards of care and deliver the best possible outcomes for patients.”
