NHS Confederation - Suicide prevention funding is welcome and timely, says Mental Health Network

Sean Duggan, chief executive of the Mental Health Network, which is part of the NHS Confederation, responded to yesterday's announcement by Public Health England and NHS England about additional funding for suicide prevention

“We very much welcome this timely announcement during Mental Health Awareness Week. “Suicide remains an issue which touches so many lives and yet remains difficult for many to discuss openly. We need to do everything we can to prevent these all-too-common tragedies, which leave immeasurable damage for those left behind.

“Approximately 90 per cent of people who die by suicide have a diagnosed or undiagnosed mental health problem at the time of their death, yet only half have ever been in contact with mental health services.

“Early intervention is crucial to ensure people receive the support they need and problems aren’t left to escalate towards crisis. This announcement brings vital resource which will help to prevent avoidable loss of life but it must go hand-in-hand with improved collaboration between NHS and local authority commissioners and providers up and down the country.”
