NHS Confederation - Test and trace figures encouraging but more to do to support people to stay at home

Dr Layla McCay, director at the NHS Confederation, responding to the latest test and trace figures

“The latest test and trace figures are encouraging, as they show new infections are coming down and fewer people being transferred to the scheme. However, the most recent urgent and emergency care numbers show the health service is still under real pressure from ongoing pandemic challenges.

"NHS teams are working as hard as they can to care for patients, but critical care bed capacity remains at a premium, and there are still nearly 33,000 patients in hospital with COVID.

"Yesterday, it was reported that up to 20,000 people a day are not self-isolating, despite being asked to do so, and today, it has emerged that there are potentially thousands of COVID variants about which we know very little. Taking these two factors together, it is clear that everyone must renew their determination to stay at home and follow the rules to help slow the spread of this virus as much as possible – and be properly supported and enabled to do so."
