NHS Confederation - There are still variables which mean we could see a resurgence in Coronavirus cases

Darren Hughes, Director of the Welsh NHS Confederation responded to the latest Welsh Government update on the Coronavirus pandemic

“Over the last few weeks, the staff across the NHS in Wales has worked incredibly hard to ramp up our capacity to deliver the vaccination programme.

“Those involved in the programme can be incredibly proud of the progress they have made. Everyday a significant number of people across Wales are now receiving the first dose of the vaccine.

“While this is very good news and it is possible that we can now look towards a brighter future, we must remember that our services are still coming under a huge amount of pressure.

“The gains we are seeing from the vaccination programme and the current restrictions haven’t yet worked their way through into the health system.

“That’s why it is so important that we continue to respect the regulations in Wales for now. We know these restrictions are hard, and that they have real life consequences for people, including mental health and wellbeing. However, there are still several variables which mean we could see a resurgence in Coronavirus cases.

“If we do see a resurgence in cases, that could mean we will also see the current pressures on our NHS get even worse than they are now.

“Over the last week or so we have seen some adverse weather in Wales, and we would like to encourage people to be careful if they have to go out for essential reasons during this time. Do the simple things such as wear appropriate clothing and footwear. If you do get an appointment for your Coronavirus vaccine but you cannot make it due to the weather, please remember that you can rearrange it easily and we won’t leave anyone behind.”
