NHS anchor institutions must be force for positive change in communities, says NHS Confederation

Michael Wood, Head of Health Economic Partnerships at the NHS Confederation, responded to Health Foundation report Building healthier communities: the role of the NHS as an anchor institution

“The NHS is the largest employer in this country and this report taps the growing enthusiasm to maximise its importance in local communities and economies as a force for positive change on issues including workforce, affordable housing and reducing environmental impact.

“We welcome the report’s emphasis on learning from the good work already being done and its reference to the NHS Confederation’s work about how NHS organisations can work with Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). These local relationships should be a strategic priority for the NHS to develop in every area and the anchor role is a natural first step.

“We also agree that the introduction of primary care networks (PCNs) in England may create new opportunities to work at scale and implement anchor strategies in primary care.”
