NHS delivers 15 million COVID-19 boosters

NHS National Director of Vaccinations and Screening Steve Russell comments on figures published this afternoon that more than 15 million COVID-19 boosters have been delivered this autumn

NHS National Director of Vaccinations and Screening Steve Russell said: “The NHS has now delivered more than 15 million autumn booster vaccines since September, providing crucial protection from COVID-19 to those at greatest risk from the virus and helping to reduce the number of people in hospitals.

“As temperatures finally drop and we move into winter, it remains vital that anyone who needs their flu and COVID-19 jabs comes forward and books as soon as possible. With thousands of sites still offering the vaccines, it’s never been easier. You can book an appointment online and in many areas there are walk-in sites where you don’t even need an appointment”.

Dr Mary Ramsay, Director of Public Health Programmes at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said: “The incredible efforts of our NHS colleagues, working closely with directors of public health in their local communities and UKHSA scientists and clinicians, have ensured better protection for millions of people at higher risk of illness from COVID-19 this autumn.

“It remains important though that everyone eligible comes forward for the jab ahead of winter, when we expect COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses to be even more prevalent. Don’t let your festive celebrations be spoiled by illness. Come forward for your booster as soon as possible”.

A record number of sites are delivering autumn boosters, while millions are also being offered their annual flu jab at thousands of community pharmacies and GP surgeries across England – with over 17 million now receiving their annual dose.
