techUK welcomes the new strategy & encourages further collaboration with suppliers for its ambition and vision to be realised.

Yesterday, 21 January 2020, at the Police ICT Summit we saw the launch of the National Digital, Data and Technology Strategy 2020-2030 by Commissioner Ian Dyson QPM, City of London Police, Chair of the IMORCC. A comprehensive strategy that recognises the need to harness digital opportunities from existing and emerging technologies to modernise our policing services and improve public safety outcomes. This Digital Strategy for policing builds on the Policing 2025 Vision to lay the foundations for a police service which is fit for 2030. It sets out the:

• Ambition for how digital can transform key dimensions of the police service alongside the priorities that support this.
• Key data and technology enablers that will provide the foundation for digital transformation, with implications on our people, ethics and policing capabilities.
• Considerations for how policing mobilises and organises effectively to deliver the strategy over the next five years.

The strategy considers the internal and external pressures facing the service and presents five key digital ambitions: Seamless citizen experience; addressing harm; enabling officers & staff through digital; embedding a whole public system approach; and empowering the private sector. This is underpinned by seven data and technology enablers:

1. Data
2. Strategic alignment and design
3. Modernised core technology
4. Connected technology
5. Risk and security
6. Talent in data and technology
7. Transforming the PoliceTech market

The strategy rightly recognises that technology is the easy part, for it to be meaningful people need to be at the heart of the transformation and the right environment needs to be created – looking at everything from skills, capability, culture, leadership and ethics.

Commenting on the Digital Strategy, techUK’s Chair of the Justice & Emergency Services Committee Allan Fairley yesterday said:

It is a comprehensive document, recognising the important role digital and data will play in modernising our police forces and improving service outcomes. To realise the ambition of the Strategy, industry must be engaged as they are a crucial partner in helping to create the conditions for meaningful transformation. techUK has already begun work looking at breaking down the barriers to collaboration through its Interoperability Charter work and can work with police forces across the country to horizon scan and understand what the art of the possible is when it comes to data and technology.”
