National Volunteers Week-landlords share their volunteering stories

This week is volunteering week, and many landlords have been taking to our social media channels to let us know about some of the things they do to volunteer in their community.

Volunteers week is an annual event run by membership organisation National Council for Voluntary Orgnisations (NCVO) to say thank you to all those who volunteer across the country.

During the current coronavirus pandemic, landlords have been letting us know how they are helping support their communities in their free time. We’ve also heard about plenty of other volunteering that has been happening outside of the lockdown, and these stories can be read below.

“I’ve been helping key workers and homeless people wash their clothes for free at my laundrette”

Many landlords have let us know how they’re helping their tenants out at the moment, but some have told us they are also reaching out to help people in their local communities at what is an unusual time.

One such landlord in Twickenham based Ben Khosa, who has opened up his self service launderette to enable key workers and homeless people to wash their clothes quickly and for free.

“I volunteer for the UKs only paralysed motorcycle racing team”

When we’re not in lockdown, landlord Julie shared that she can often be found volunteering with the UKs only paralysed motorcycle team-working with the charity the Bike Experiences, which supports people who are living with disabilities to be able to race.

“I volunteer for my local hospice in a donation warehouse”

Some landlords also let us know they are doing multiple volunteering projects, such as landlord Sue. Sue helps sort donations in a warehouse, before they are distributed to charity shops in the local area. She’s also planning on qualifying as a guide runner for visually impaired people who want to take part in Park Run events.

“I volunteer with GirlGuiding and at my local church”

Landlord Alison shared that her volunteering focuses on lending a hand at her local girl guiding unit and also at her church.

  • This is just a snapshot of some of the fantastic volunteering some of our members are getting up to either during the pandemic or when we’re not in lockdown. More stories about landlords helping out in their community can be read in our members magazine, which recently featured how two lettings agents spent several weeks volunteering in Malawi and how one landlord is volunteering in schools across Milton Keynes.
  • Have a volunteering story of your own to share? We’d love to hear from you! Please join in on our facebook thread about this, or why not comment below this article to share your story.
