New Head of Apprenticeships joins BCS

Annette Allmark has joined BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT as the organisation’s Head of Apprenticeships.

Previously the director of strategic policy at People 1st, Annette brings with her a wealth of experience in apprenticeships. At People 1st, she was central to the government’s apprenticeship reform for the visitor economy sector, facilitating the development of employer-designed apprenticeship standards.

Working alongside major sector employers, she gained insight into their main concerns and priorities regarding the introduction of the new apprenticeship system and levy, and played a key role in communicating these matters to government.

Prior to working on the apprenticeship reform, she was responsible for establishing sector recognition of best practice training and has had 20 years’ experience of setting industry standards, influencing and designing vocational learning and aligning employers’ skills needs with government policy.

Lucy Ireland, MD at BCS (L&D), said that Annette’s background in apprenticeship reform will help to drive the rise of digital apprentices.

“While the number of apprentices joining the workforce across all sectors is declining - by as much as a third year-on-year - digital apprenticeships continue to buck the trend, with almost as many digital apprentices joining the industry in the first two quarters of 2018 (23,730) than enrolled in the whole of the academic year 2016/7 (28,230).

“This is a small but important step to producing the skilled workforce that will maintain the UK’s advantage in the digital economy.

“We’re thrilled to have Annette’s expertise and look forward to her helping us to drive forward the growth in digital apprenticeships.”
