The Charity Commission has opened a statutory inquiry into One Nation (registered charity number 1156200).

The Charity Commission, the independent regulator of charities in England and Wales, has opened an investigation into the charity One Nation (registered charity number 1156200). The inquiry was opened on 16 November 2016.The charity’s objects provide for the relief of hardship of people in any part of the world and in particular disaster relief.

The inquiry was opened after a follow-up visit to the charity in July 2016 and a subsequent review of the charity’s records which identified failure in the charity’s management and administration. The Commission’s concerns are heightened by the fact it has already provided regulatory advice and guidance to the trustees of the charity on a number of issues relevant to the charity given its objects and areas of operation. These included due diligence on partners, monitoring and verifying the end use of funds and trustee decision-making.

The Commission has exercised its powers under section 84 of the Charities Act 2011 to direct the trustees to take certain actions to address the issues raised with the trustees.

The inquiry will examine:

• the trustees’ decision-making
• the financial controls and management of the Charity
• the trustees’ management of relationships and work with other individuals and organisations and their due diligence leading up to and during such relationships
• whether or not the trustees have complied with and fulfilled their duties and responsibilities as trustees under charity law

It is the Commission’s policy, after it has concluded an inquiry, to publish a report detailing what issues the inquiry looked at, what actions were undertaken as part of the inquiry and what the outcomes were. Reports of previous inquiries by the Commission are available on GOV.UK.
