Patients Association - Publication of Health and Social Care Funding – Interim Report

Today an interim report was published sharing progress of findings from an independent panel of healthcare experts on solutions to the health and social care crisis.

A panel of a independent specialists with extensive experience in the fields of health, social care and health economics are working to develop a response to the funding crises facing health and social care service in the UK. The panel were brought together by Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb MP, to provide a view on the financial problems facing health and social care and provide possible solutions to them.

In response to the interim report publication, Katherine Murphy, Chief Executive of The Patients Association, said: “There is a clear and pressing need to re-evaluate how we fund health and social care. That is why I was pleased to join this panel of independent experts, to develop recommendations for a possible future settlement.

“Today’s interim report is a valuable addition to the debate. It states hard truths about the shortcomings of current arrangements, which have long been obvious but are too seldom recognised in mainstream politics.

“The Patients Association believes that more money is needed and that the best way of securing it is to pool risk across the whole population. In other words, the most efficient way of doing it is for everyone to chip in, rather than a shift to large-scale reliance on self-funding as and when people fall ill.

“We hope the Chancellor’s forthcoming green paper will take an equally sensible approach, and that a way forward can finally be found that isn’t obstructed by party political considerations.

“We will continue to work with Norman Lamb, through to the publication of the final report; and with anyone else keen to engage with these vitally important issues in a mature and pragmatic way.”
