Police pursuit before fatal Birmingham crash was carried out appropriately

Our investigation into a fatal collision in Birmingham concluded that a police pursuit beforehand was carried out appropriately.

Sarah Giles, aged 20, died and a man she was with was seriously injured when the VW Golf they were travelling in was hit by a stolen Audi which went through a junction at Kingstanding.

The Audi had failed to stop for West Midlands Police and was pursued along Kingsland Road to the junction with Wandsworth Road, where the collision occurred during the evening of 29 July last year (2018).

Five people in the Audi were detained at the scene and taken to hospital. The driver, Brandon Daniels, was jailed for six years at Birmingham Crown Court last November after he admitted causing death by dangerous driving and other motoring offences.

The two police constables involved in the pursuit were both advanced level drivers and, following the collision, provided medical assistance until colleagues and paramedics arrived.

All police officers and staff were treated as witnesses during the course of our investigationwhich was completed within five months.

IOPC Regional Director Derrick Campbell yesterday said:

“My sympathies are with the family of Sarah Giles and all those affected by her death.

“Our investigation found that the pursuit was authorised, proportionate and carried out in accordance with local and national policy. The police officers drove a safe distance behind the stolen vehicle and ultimately it was the manner in which the Audi was driven which led to such tragic consequences.”

Evidence gathered during our inquiries included in-car footage, police radio transmissions, witness statements, vehicle examination and collision investigation reports.
