Privatisation of Channel 4 is long overdue, says IEA expert

Professor Philip Booth, Senior Academic Fellow at free market think tank the Institute of Economic Affairs, responded to Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden MP’s suggestion that Channel 4 could be privatised in less than three years

“The concept of public service broadcasting as a special category that should be supported by the state is now redundant given changes in technology.

“The privatisation of Channel 4 should be one of a number of reforms in the next few years, which should culminate in the BBC becoming a subscription service.

“There is no need for a nationalised television channel in the 21st century. This is long overdue.”
