Professor Rosemary Hollis: 1952 - 2020

The Institute and its staff mark with profound sadness and regret the sudden passing of Professor Rosemary Hollis, a former colleague and a close friend, as well as a noted and widely respected Middle East expert.

After pursuing a decade-long academic career in the US, Professor Hollis returned to the United Kingdom in 1990 to establish the Middle East studies programme at the Institute. In that position, she quickly rose to prominence with a number of research achievements which included the publication of a seminal article which warned about the possibility of an Iraqi invasion of Kuwait a full few months before the 1990 invasion took place. She followed this with many other books, articles and collected works published by the Institute.

Rosie – as she was known to all her colleagues – left the Institute in 1995 to take up a position at Chatham House and, subsequently, at City University. But throughout her career she remained a firm friend of the Institute, and a staunch supporter of our activities.

She will be sorely missed.
