Putting disabled people at the centre of our communications
The Government Communication Service has published new training for its members on how to add audio description to videos, building on a wealth of practical resources focused on ensuring the highest standards when it comes to inclusivity.
The guidance has been created to support those thinking about accessibility and audio description on their products, but unsure where to start.
Libby Daniels, Senior Campaigns and Communications Manager, Equality Hub yesterday said:
“Ensuring our content is accessible for all is always important, but never more so than around our communications for the National Disability Strategy.
“When creating a video for the launch, we made sure we were thinking about accessible formats including audio description upfront, which not only allowed us to create all relevant products on time, but can significantly cut down on cost and effort.”

Peter Heneghan, Head of Digital for GCS, yesterday commented:
“Digital technology has changed the way organisations work, enabling inclusivity by design. Here at GCS, we lead the way in digital communication through establishing best practice across the profession in collaboration with other departments and the Government Digital Service.
“Putting disabled people at the centre of our communications is both about the format and the content. Without appropriate formats, it can be easy for our message to be lost and therefore it needs to be considered in everything we do as government communicators.”
