PwC Survey Reveals Need to Promote Benefits of Smart Home Devices

Majority don’t want smart home technology, but those with devices reap the benefits.

PwC have released their latest survey on attitudes to smart home technology, with data reflecting hesitancy from consumers to adopt connected home devices, regardless of benefits seen by current users.

PwC commissioned the survey of over 2,000 UK households to gauge consumer interest in smart home technology.

Of those consumers already using smart heating devices, 81% are seeing a positive impact, and 95% of smart appliance owners (smart fridges, ovens, etc.) are already noticing benefits.

In spite of positive user experience statistics, the report found that 72% of respondents are “unlikely” to introduce smart technology into their homes in the next two to five years. This majority also stated that even where smart home devices are offered, they would not pay for them.

A further concern was revealed in the low percentage of respondents (34%) that would rely on their energy company for support in installing smart devices. In addition, only one in three felt confident that they could install smart devices themselves, with others fearing a complex process.

PwC UK’s power and utilities leader, Steve Jennings, stated that energy companies need to address “a perceived complex technology challenge” and address consumer reluctance to pay for devices or installation.

The report also asked consumers what would make them more likely to introduce smart home technology into their household and money was the biggest factor.

37% would be more likely to adopt devices if they were supplied and installed for free, and a further 35% of consumers would respond to a financial incentive of paybacks through a reduction in energy bills.

techUK will discuss these and others challenges for smart home technology during our Connected Home: Beyond Bricks and Mortar event, part of London Technology Week.
