Ransomware and the NHS – What is techUK doing?

Exactly a week ago a wide range of institutions across the world were hit by the ‘Wannacry’ ransomware attack, from Spanish Banks to the Russian Government.

Perhaps the most worrisome impact for Britons was the news that NHS trusts had been hit, impacting their ability to deliver critical services.

Since the events on 12 May 2017 techUK has been working with members and NHS bodies to help mitigate the effects and protect against future attacks. Our Health and Cyber Security Working Group has a busy period ahead – so here’s what we’re up to:

Working with NHS England

In the immediate aftermath of the attacks we offered assistance to key NHS stakeholders, and have been actively assisting NHS England to help them to assess the level of risk associated with Medical Devices and Diagnostic Equipment.

NHS Digital Industry Briefings

On the 21 and 28 June we are hosting Industry Briefings with NHS Digital’s Director of Digital Transformation Beverley Bryant. The briefings will include a focused session with NHS Digital’s Cyber team. Book now to ensure your place.

Cyber Security and the NHS Event

On 20 July we are holding a focused session on Cyber Security with NHS Digital. The event will be posted on our website shortly.

National Cyber Security Guidance

And lastly, techUK has reproduced and helped publicise the guidance that the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) released over the weekend and on Monday to help companies affected or concerned about the ransomware attack. This guidance was also sent to all of our members across a wide range of sectors.
