Recruitment starts for new EHRC Chair and board members

The Government Equalities Office (GEO) is today (29th June) beginning recruitment for a new Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and up to four board members.

The move comes as the tenure of the current EHRC Chair, David Isaac, comes to an end in August.

It is expected that appointments will be made this winter. Current Deputy Chair, Caroline Waters, will assume the role of Interim Chair and current board member, Susan Johnson, will take the role of Interim Deputy Chair upon Mr Isaac’s departure and until the new appointments are confirmed.

Minister for Women & Equalities, Liz Truss, said:

“I would like to thank David Isaac for his hard work and commitment to equality and fairness during his time as Chairman.

“The EHRC carries out a vital role by independently investigating and eliminating unlawful discrimination in this country. We will continue to ensure that its board is best placed to take forward this important work.”

As part of the recruitment process, it is hoped a new Wales Commissioner will also be appointed to the EHRC’s board, with the role currently unoccupied.

The EHRC is independent statutory body with the responsibility to encourage equality and diversity, eliminate unlawful discrimination, and protect and promote the human rights of everyone in Britain.

The GEO sponsors the EHRC and as a result the Minister for Women & Equalities has statutory responsibility for appointing 10 to 15 Commissioners, including the Chair and the Wales and Scotland Commissioners.

Recruitment for the roles begins today and applications will be taken until August 3rd 2020.
