11th November 2018 marked the centenary of the end of the First World War. During this period of remembrance MI5 joined people around the world in reflecting on the lives that were changed and those that were lost.
Andrew Parker, Director General MI5 recently said:
11th November this year is of course the 100th anniversary of the first Armistice Day marking the end of World War One. We mark it every year in memory of the fallen in all wars, then and since. We do so in MI5 for all the obvious solemn reasons concerning conflict and loss. We also have a strong historical link because of our security intelligence role through wartime and conflicts, dating right back to MI5's formation in the run-up to World War One to deal with German espionage at the time.
Many members of MI5 actively support the Royal British Legion in their fantastic work with veterans, injured members of the armed forces, and families. We do that not only in poppy sales, but also through fundraising events. For all these reasons, we display a poppy in the foyer all year round, along with our own book of remembrance for all who die in service.
