Romania’s first EU presidency: Achieving cohesion will be challenging

Romania took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in January. Open Europe's Anna Nadibaidze and Zoe Alipranti assess the presidency's goals and the outlook for EU politics in the coming months.

The role of the rotating presidency of the Council remains largely symbolic. The member state holding the position gets to set the agenda, but ultimately it does not play a role in deciding future European policies.
