The Secretary of State for Justice has announced the appointment of Nick Ephgrave as policing member of the Sentencing Council for England and Wales, for a period of 3 years from 26 June 2020.

Since March 2020, Nick has been Assistant Commissioner (AC) for Frontline Policing in the Metropolitan Poice (Met). He previously served as AC for Met Operations after returning to the Met after serving as Chief Constable of Surrey Police. As a Chief Officer, Nick has national portfolio responsibility for Criminal Justice. Nick’s extensive police career has spanned 30 years and has included a number of senior operational roles.

Nick Ephgrave has not declared any political activity.

The Sentencing Council for England and Wales was set up by Part 4 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (the Act) to promote greater transparency and consistency in sentencing whilst maintaining the independence of the judiciary.

Appointments to the Sentencing Council are made by the Secretary of State for Justice and are regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

This appointment has been made in line with the Governance Code on Public Appointments.
