Species such as Cod may be a fifth smaller by 2050 - WWF comment
Dr Lyndsey Dodds, Head of UK Marine Policy at WWF, commented on announcements made at the 50th Anniversary Symposium of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles at the University of Exeter
"The world's oceans are set to change unrecognisably as climate change leads to warmer and more acidic waters, impacting on all marine wildlife that call them home. Declining levels of oxygen will reduce the ability for fish stocks to breed and grow, affecting the viability of the fishing industry and the coastal communities whose livelihoods depend on it.
"We need to see ambitious and adaptable marine management including ensuring all our fisheries are fished sustainably, as well as the designation of further marine protected areas to provide an insurance policy against the impacts of climate change. But most significantly, to prevent further damage to our oceans it is essential that we reduce our carbon emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and invest in a low carbon future."
