Statement from Joanna Rea, Director of Advocacy for the UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) in response to the launch of the UK Government’s new approach to Ending Preventable Deaths

The Government’s Ending Preventable Deaths Approach Paper has the potential to make a huge difference for children and families all over the world, averting millions of preventable deaths and creating stronger health systems and a healthier world for all.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the biggest threat to progress for children in UNICEF’s 75-year history. It has resulted in unprecedented disruption to the essential and life-saving services that the world’s most marginalised children and their mothers depend on. Around the world, millions of children are without access to the health care, routine vaccines, sufficient food, and the essential services they need to survive. Their lives and futures are at risk.

At this pivotal moment for children, the Approach Paper’s focus on rights and equity could be truly transformative. To deliver on the promise of this Paper, the UK must use its united development and diplomacy to galvanise global support for ending preventable deaths by 2030 and prioritise investment in the urgent action needed to secure a brighter and better future for millions of mothers and children around the world.
