ICO Statement in response to new Snapchat location feature.
An ICO spokesperson said:
“From a data protection perspective the new Snapchat location feature offers clear instructions. Anyone choosing to share their location in the settings is made aware that their location is then visible.
“It’s vital that young people and their parents understand the privacy implications that often come with new features on social media, so they can make informed choices. When businesses introduce new features and upgrades to their apps and websites, they must make the privacy controls easily accessible and very clear – particularly where children and young people are concerned.
“There’s a lot of advice and guidance for children and parents about staying safe online including CEOP's website: Thinkuknow.co.uk. where there is an updated version of their parents and carers’ guide to Snapchat.”
