Switzerland to Cease DVB-T Broadcasting in 2019

Switzerland will become one of the first EU countries to abandon DTT broadcasting opting instead for delivery technologies such as cable, internet and satellite.

Switzerland have stated that they will abandon digital terrestrial television broadcasts during 2019 to focus on, what they claim are, more widespread technologies such as cable, Internet and satellite.

Since newer and more efficient broadcasting technologies have been introduced, the DVB-T network now has a secondary role in Switzerland, currently being used by only 2 per cent of households. Some 200 DVB-T transmitters are active in Switzerland and, due to the spillover effect, some can also be received in neighbouring Italy.

The UK remains one of the European countries with the most significant reach and audience share of television consumption from terrestrial digital broadcasting. Whilst some in the UK, including the BBC, have talked about a future content delivery world without terrestrial broadcasting the widely held views are that any abandoning of this platform in the UK is a long way off, probably decades.
