TUC: Universal credit risks creating debt trap for working people
Speaking yesterday ahead of the Commons debate on Universal Credit, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:
“Six weeks is a ridiculous time to make people wait for cash support. Ministers are creating a debt trap for those who fall upon hard times.
“The government needs to start listening to what charities and unions have been warning for ages. Universal Credit is not fit for purpose in its current form.
“If the government ploughs on with the roll-out it will damage the safety net we all pay into.”
Notes to editors:
- The TUC first raised the issues of delays to Universal Credit payments in 2014. A copy of the report Universal Credit: the problem of delay in benefit payments can be found at https://www.tuc.org.uk/sites/default/files/BenefitsDelayed2014.pdf
- The Trades Union Congress (TUC) exists to make the working world a better place for everyone. We bring together more than 5.6 million working people who make up our 50 member unions. We support unions to grow and thrive, and we stand up for everyone who works for a living.
