Tackling London's biggest issues using tech & innovation

Mayor of London launches 2019 Civic Innovation Challenge which calls on innovators to develop solutions to London’s biggest challenges.

Yesterday Mayor of London, Sadiq Kan, launched this year’s Civic Innovation Challenge at Microsoft’s Regent Street store. The Civic Innovation Challenge is the Mayor’s flagship technology and innovation programme and offers an opportunity for start-ups to work together with leading corporates and public organisations to tackle some of London’s most pressing problems.

This year’s challenges and public sector sponsors are:

  • Countering Violent Extremism Online: How can we use technology to stop the spread of terrorist and violent extremist material online and make London safer? Challenge partner is Metropolitan Police Service.
  • Democratising Planning: How can we use data and technology to democratise planning, and ensure we can tackle the housing crisis facing Londoners? Challenge partner is Greater London Authority.
  • More efficient freight in London: How can innovation help to make the way goods and services move around London safer, cleaner and more efficient? Challenge partner is Transport for London.

As well as helping to improve the lives of Londoners the programme helps innovators to access the public sector market, which at times can be hard to navigate. For those interested in getting involved you can apply now, and the closing date is 12 December 2019. For further details about the process and the various phases click here.
