The benefits of Formative Assessment

Formative assessment is becoming increasingly important and widely recognised for the benefits it can bring to the learning experience. Teachers and educators can use formative assessment as a critical plank in their pedagogical practice.

This approach allows learners to make mistakes, clarify their understanding and act on feedback to develop their skills and knowledge. The process can be done in a supportive environment which allows learners to test, create, innovate and challenge without the pressure of summative grading. Moreover this process can prepare students for summative assessment by removing the fear and familiarising them with the tools of assessment technique Formative assessment is a key tool in tracking a learner’s progress and ensuring they’re getting the most out of their programme.

At NCFE we put the learner at the heart of everything we do and we think formative assessment is a fantastic opportunity for the learner to engage in their own learning and track their progress. We fully embrace the assessment for learning benefits which formative assessment can bring and work closely with teaching teams to support different approaches to formative assessment.

We’re proud to support the 2019 e-Assessment Awards and to sponsor the award for the Best Use of Formative Assessment. If you’d like to find out more about the awards, you can visit their website here.
