The Government Office of Product Safety and Standards is a key stakeholder for this week of consumer focused campaigns with electrical safety at its heart.

A number of UK bodies will work together to promote consumer advice and best practice for International Product Safety Week. The Government Office of Product Safety and Standards, along with the Trading Standards Office, are key stakeholders and supported of this event.

The week is not just about consumer electrical devices, but the safe use, repair and disposal of these devices features prominently.

Electrical Safety First, a leading UK charity that supports safe installation and use of electrical installations and devices is just one such body that will use the week to promote best practice. 

The Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) is running a campaign across the UK to promote consumer device registration via registermyappliance.org.uk ensuring that they will be the first to know in the rare case of a safety notice or product recall.

With an estimated 170 million3 large appliances in use in UK homes, the call is going out to all those who have yet to register to commit those few minutes to making their homes safer. Two thirds (67%) of people have never registered an older appliance whether bought a couple of years before, that they found in their home when the moved in, or were by given by family or friends, or bought second hand, according to research commissioned by AMDEA.

AMDEA’s acting Chief Executive, Sian Lewis yesterday said:

“Just because you’ve had a chest freezer in the garage for a few years does not mean you should neglect to register it. It’s important, to keep your home safe. Take stock of all your appliances and get them registered. If there is ever an emergency repair or a recall, the manufacturer will then know where to find you.”
