Threat level reduced to SEVERE

First Minister thanks emergency services for their response.

The National Threat level has been reduced from CRITICAL to SEVERE - meaning an attack is no longer considered to be imminent but remains ‘highly likely’ - following an assessment by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC).

In line with the UK-wide policing operation, Police Scotland has announced that it will gradually scale back its response, while ensuring it remains proportionate and appropriate.

Thanking the emergency services and the public for their patience, the First Minister said:

“I would like to commend the outstanding response by the emergency services, security and intelligence agencies since the incident on the London underground on Friday.

“While it is welcome that the terror threat level has returned to SEVERE I would urge everyone to remain vigilant.

“In keeping with the UK operation, Police Scotland is gradually scaling back its response in light of the decrease in threat level. However, they will ensure that policing remains proportionate and appropriate.

“There is no intelligence of a specific threat to Scotland; however, security measures and enhanced security  around major events will stay in place and the Scottish Government will continue to work closely with Police Scotland.”
