Universities and colleges across England to work on 27 new degree apprenticeship development projects
Working in partnership with employers, the projects will seek to develop 4,500 new apprenticeship opportunities to start from September 2018 onwards. They will create new opportunities for apprentices to develop careers ranging from social work and nursing to construction and engineering.
Designed by employers, higher education providers and professional bodies, degree apprenticeships bring together higher education study with paid work. They enable the development of high-level skills, providing an alternative route to a degree and a career. Degree apprentices are employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week and earn a degree alongside their employment.
The new projects have been awarded funding from HEFCE in the second round of this two-year programme, following awards to 18 projects in 2016 (Note 1).
Madeleine Atkins, HEFCE Chief Executive, said:
‘We commend the universities and colleges which successfully competed for funding in this second phase of the Degree Apprenticeship Development Fund. They will now work with employers to develop new degree apprenticeship provision across a variety of sectors. This will help more people to access higher education, and to follow their chosen career, while closing the skills gaps in the economy.’
