Updated evidence of UK and Wales human rights progress available on human rights tracker

As of yesterday, organisations and individuals can find evidence of action and progress by the UK and Welsh Governments across 12 new human rights topics on HumanRightsTracker.com.

New human rights topics added to the site include the equality and human rights legal framework, mental health and political and civic participation.

Launched in 2019 as Europe’s first tool to track and monitor human rights, our Human Rights Tracker provides a succinct summary of key actions the UK and Welsh Governments have taken since 2016, and an assessment of the direction of progress in meeting international human rights standards.

The simple to use ‘Check on progress’ page was added to the site in December 2020, providing an at-a-glance view of the state of human rights, and will be updated with more topics over the course of 2021.

Kishwer Falkner, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, yesterday said:

“More needs to be done to understand, protect and strengthen people’s human rights, and any reduction in rights protections should be challenged.

“The Government’s levelling up agenda presents new opportunities to advance equality and human rights in Britain, and we stand ready to help make this happen by using our unique powers to help deliver real change.

“Human rights are of fundamental importance to all of our lives. Only by working together can we shape the society we want and make sure that – whatever the future holds – peoples’ rights are respected and protected.”

The UK is signed up to seven UN human rights treaties, which set the standard for human rights across the globe.

We have reviewed what actions the UK and Welsh Governments have taken in relation to a number of different human rights issues, and has assessed the progress made.

Our assessments are based on governments’ progress since 2016 and the UK and Welsh Governments are reviewed separately for those human rights issues that are devolved to the Welsh Government.
