Water company finances in the spotlight at watchdog’s meeting

Members of the public are being invited to hear how water companies in the North West of England are spending their money when the Consumer Council for Water (CCWater) meets in Liverpool on Thursday (25th October).

Representatives from United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, Northumbrian Water and Hartlepool Water will be joining CCWater in Liverpool to discuss financial transparency in the water industry, an issue which has been under increasing focus from politicians and the media in recent months.

Water companies will be questioned on a number of topics including profits and dividends, corporate tax and executive pay – factors which can have a significant impact upon consumers’ trust in their water company and affect their perceptions of fairness and value for money. At the start of the meeting members of the public will have the opportunity to put their own questions to companies.

Robert Light, Northern Chair of the Consumer Council for Water, said: “This is a great opportunity for consumers to hear first-hand from water companies about where the money from their water bills goes. We want to see an increased commitment to openness and transparency in the water industry and this is a chance for water companies to show consumers that they are taking their views seriously.”

Following the Q&A session, companies will be asked to share the lessons learned following supply interruption incidents as a result of the ‘Beast from the East’ in March, and to explain what they are doing to minimise the impact on customers in the event of similar conditions in the future. In addition, all companies will provide an update on their water resource plans following the dry weather conditions in the summer.

The meeting will begin at 12.30 pm at the Brain Charity, Norton Street, Liverpool, L3 8LR. If you would like to attend or have any questions, please email Emily Flavell at Emily.Flavell@ccwater.org.uk
